Specialist Metabolic Physician

Fractional/Fixed Term – 28hpfn from 20 October 2025 – 11 January 2026.

Unit Description:

The Metabolic Diseases Unit is a specialist unit at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, providing state-wide services to adult patients across Victoria and Tasmania with a range of suspected and confirmed inborn errors of metabolism. With growing patient numbers, this small team is highly committed to their patients, working closely together in a multidisciplinary team to achieve the best patient outcomes. The predominantly outpatient service is provided for all patients with genetic metabolic conditions, such as phenylketonuria, lysosomal storage diseases, glycogen storage diseases and mitochondrial disease.
About the role:
This is a 0.4 fractional, fixed-term, long-service leave cover appointment. The Specialist Physician in Metabolic Diseases is responsible for providing expert clinical care to patients with inherited metabolic disorders through outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and participation in a shared on-call roster. The role also includes supervision and mentorship of trainees and fellows, contribution to multidisciplinary team care, and active involvement in the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based metabolic medicine services

About You:

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
  • MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
  • Demonstrable interest in the diagnosis of and care for patients with Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
  • Completion of Advanced Training in a relevant specialty, such as metabolic diseases, general medicine, endocrinology, neurology or genetics.
  • Practical experience at a consultant level in either paediatric metabolic diseases or a relevant adult specialty.
