Medical Scientist – Malignant Hyperthermia Diagnostic Unit (MHDU)

An exciting opportunity exists for a Medical Scientist to join the Malignant Hyperthermia Diagnostic Unit (MHDU) within the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management. The MHDU provides specialised diagnostic services and expert advice to individuals and clinicians across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania who may be at risk of Malignant Hyperthermia.
In this role, you will perform in-vitro contracture testing for MH diagnosis, contribute to quality assurance and laboratory accreditation activities, and support clinical research initiatives within the department.
Your New Role
- Perform diagnostic in-vitro contracture testing for Malignant Hyperthermia
- Maintain laboratory records, databases and stock control
- Participate in quality assurance programs, including EMHG accreditation requirements
- Act as a key point of contact for external referrals and triage to appropriate clinicians
- Contribute to departmental quality improvement activities and clinical research
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across RMH and external MH services
About You
You are a motivated and detail-oriented scientist who thrives in a specialised diagnostic environment and is keen to develop expertise in a rare but critical field of medicine.
You will bring:
- A Bachelor of Science (Hons), Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) or equivalent (Masters or PhD desirable)
- Strong laboratory skills and understanding of scientific methodology
- Well-developed communication and problem-solving skills
- Competency with databases, spreadsheets and electronic medical records
- A willingness to learn and contribute to research and quality initiatives
Experience in excitable tissue physiology, genetic testing or a hospital diagnostic setting will be highly regarded.
