The Opportunity
The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), located within the Doherty Institute, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Pathology Technician to join our team. This full-time, fixed-term role supports both the Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) Laboratory (0.6 EFT) and the Pre-Analytical (PA) team (0.4 EFT).
In this dynamic role, you will work across diagnostic testing and pre-analytical processing to ensure the efficient receipt, registration, handling, and testing of clinical specimens. This includes contributing to the performance of virus quantitation assays using automated platforms such as the Alinity m, while supporting VIDRL’s public health and research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
• Accurately receive, triage, and register clinical samples in accordance with laboratory protocols
• Assist with diagnostic testing and molecular techniques in the BBV Laboratory
• Operate automated instrumentation for viral load testing and specimen handling
• Maintain accurate records and adhere to quality control and safety standards
• Support research and quality improvement activities
• Collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and participate in shift rosters (Monday–Friday, 8:30am–9:30pm)
About You
• Diploma in Laboratory Techniques or equivalent
• Excellent attention to detail and time management
• Demonstrated experience handling clinical samples and working in diagnostic or molecular laboratories
• Familiarity with laboratory automation and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team
• Prior experience in the detection of blood borne viruses and/or molecular diagnostics desirable
