About the role
We are seeking a Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) to lead 6SW – a 28-bed acute Nephrology and Endocrinology ward within Medical Services at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
As the NUM, you will provide visible clinical and operational leadership, ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, person-centred care while fostering a positive, engaged, and high-performing team culture.
Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will drive excellence in patient care, workforce development, quality improvement, and service performance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse leader looking to take the next step in their leadership career. 6SW is a specialist acute ward providing comprehensive care for patients with complex nephrology and endocrinology conditions. The ward delivers evidence-based care through a collaborative multidisciplinary model, with a strong focus on patient safety, clinical excellence, and person-centred outcomes.
As Nurse Unit Manager, you will play a pivotal role in leading the ward's day-to-day operations, supporting patient flow, workforce capability, and continuous improvement initiatives while ensuring the service consistently delivers outstanding care and meets organisational performance objectives.
Key Accountabilities
- Leading, coaching, and developing a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care
- Managing day-to-day ward operations including staffing, rostering, and workload allocation
- Supporting patient flow and access through effective bed management and coordination
- Driving quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and compliance with clinical standards
- Managing workforce performance, recruitment, and staff engagement
- Overseeing budget, resources, and cost centre accountability
- Building strong relationships with medical teams, allied health, and key stakeholders
About You
You are a capable and motivated nurse leader who brings:
- Proven experience in acute care, ideally within nephrology and/or endocrinology
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to build engaged and high-performing teams
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities
- A commitment to patient-centred care, safety, and continuous improvement
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex environments and competing priorities
- AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Postgraduate qualifications (or working towards) in leadership or relevant specialty (desirable)
