An opportunity exists for an experienced Medical Scientist (Grade 3) to join the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for a 12-month backfill role.
This senior molecular scientist position is responsible for delivering high-quality genomic diagnostic services and supporting the development, validation, and optimisation of molecular assays. The role combines advanced scientific expertise with strong quality and compliance leadership, ensuring all testing meets NATA and RCPA standards. Working within a new, integrated pathology network led by Melbourne Health, the position collaborates closely with clinical genetics, pathology, and bioinformatics teams to deliver accurate, timely genomic results for patient care.
Key responsibilities include variant interpretation support, test verification and documentation, quality assurance activities, staff training, and contributing to research, translational genomics, and service-wide improvement initiatives. The role also upholds safety, wellbeing, and a positive team culture, while helping build a centre of excellence spanning Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Women’s Hospital, and Royal Children’s Hospital.
About you:
You are a dedicated molecular scientist who demonstrates initiative, precision, and a commitment to delivering an exceptional diagnostic service. You bring:
- A Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, or equivalent)
- At least five years of post-graduate experience in molecular diagnostics or genetics
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Desirable:
- Strong understanding of molecular quality systems and accreditation standards
- Postgraduate qualification in molecular genetics or genomics
- Experience with predictive testing for rare diseases
