The Royal Melbourne Hospital

The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) is a leading Australian infectious diseases reference laboratory located in Melbourne, Victoria. VIDRL is part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty) a joint venture between the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne. VIDRL provides the Victorian Department of Health with virology, mycobacterial, parasitology and mycology public health reference laboratory services, including surveillance, outbreak investigations, reference testing and research. VIDRL also performs diagnostic testing, for Victorian hospitals. In addition, VIDRL has national reference laboratory designations as well as a strong commitment to international health programs through the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI).

This 12-month role will support VIDRL’s Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory (MRL) which provides rapid-turnaround diagnostic testing from primary specimens for all mycobacteria – especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium ulcerans. The MRL also provides reference functions for mycobacteria for the state of Victoria, specifically performing identification and susceptibility testing utilising both conventional and molecular methods from submitted isolates within Victoria and the Northern Territory. The MRL works closely with the Victorian Tuberculosis Program.

We are seeking a part time (0.6EFT), fixed term Medical Laboratory Technician position within the Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory (MRL) at VIDRL.  The person will be responsible for supporting the activities performed within the MRL which operates under both physical containment levels 2 and 3. The role involves key tasks such as the processing of primary samples for both culture and molecular assays, as well as quality tasks, reagent preparation and equipment maintenance.

Your new role:

  • Processing of primary samples for routine culture and microscopy
  • Processing of routine samples for molecular assays
  • Reagent preparation
  • Assist with quality tasks within the laboratory
  • Assist with equipment maintenance
  • Autoclaving laboratory waste as needed
  • Assist with the receipt of laboratory consumables
  • Other duties as may be directed from time to time

About you:

  • Experience in basic laboratory techniques
  • Ability to contribute effectively as a participative team member
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills
  • Experience working in a diagnostic laboratory
  • Experience in handling infectious materials
  • Experience with the use of an autoclave
