The Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) is a leading Australian infectious disease reference laboratory based in the Peter Doherty Institute, providing specialised diagnostic and reference laboratory services supporting state, national and international public health.
Your new role
This role sits within the Mycobacterial Reference Laboratory (MRL) at VIDRL and will participate in the development and implementation of a fixed term project ‘Determining and Extrapolating Microbial Inactivation and Susceptibility of Tuberculosis (DEMIST)’.
The DEMIST study aims to understand the dose-response of germicidal ultraviolet-C (UVC) irradiation to inactivate M.tuberculosis and other airborne pathogens. It will involve undertaking aerosolization chamber experiments within the MRL PC3 laboratory, and all necessary steps to prepare pathogen inocula, detect and quantitate pathogen inactivation under various conditions. Scientists with experience in Mycobacteriology, Airborne Pathogen Research and High Containment scientific laboratories are encouraged to apply.
There is also an expectation of undertaking a small amount of diagnostic mycobacteriology testing, as part of the routine workflow in the Mycobacteria laboratory.
About you
- Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Honours), Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent is required.
- PhD or higher degree relevant to Mycobacteria or Microbiology is preferred.
- Proven track record of research, including publications and grant funding.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and time management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to work well in a team.
