An exciting opportunity is available for a Laboratory Assistant (Specimen Reception) to join the Central Specimen Reception (CSR) team within Pathology at RMH. This role is critical to the timely and accurate handling of diagnostic specimens in a busy 24/7 laboratory environment, directly supporting patient care and clinical decision-making.
You will work as part of a high-performing, collaborative team and be rostered across rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Your new role:
- Receive, triage and register diagnostic specimens with a high level of accuracy
- Perform episode entry and specimen tracking using the Pathology Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Load and unload samples onto the Pathology Track system
- Undertake pre-analytical processing of specimens prior to testing
- Package and dispatch specimens to external laboratories (local and interstate)
- Liaise with medical, nursing and allied health staff to resolve specimen or documentation issues
- Troubleshoot labelling discrepancies and coordinate recollections where required
- Maintain accurate records, filing systems and sample documentation
- Provide general laboratory assistance and support departmental operations
About you:
Essential
- Previous experience in specimen reception within a pathology service
- Ability to work across a 24/7 rotating roster, including nights, weekends and public holidays
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands under pressure
Desirable
- Background in Medical Laboratory Science or other scientific discipline
- Strong computer literacy and familiarity with Pathology LIS (e.g. AUSLAB)
- Interest in quality improvement and process optimisation
