Intensive Care Unit - First Year Consultant
Full time / Fixed Term 12-month appointment, commencing 2 February 2026
The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.
About the Role: This one-year fixed term full time salaried career development position will allow a recently qualified intensive care specialist to gain experience as a practicing intensivist. The successful candidate will be fully integrated into the consultant clinical roster of the adult intensive care service of the Royal Melbourne Hospital for a 12-month period.
This exciting position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team that provides intensive care to critically ill patients of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Women’s Hospital in a state-of-the art 42 bed capacity Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The RMH ICU admits nearly 3000 patients per year and, as a level one trauma centre and the state referral centre for stroke services, an intermediate ECMO centre, and provides intensive care support for a wide variety of clinical presentations.
The position is a predominantly clinical role with a component of non-clinical time. The successful appointee will be expected to use their non-clinical time to take the lead on coordinating the ICU Registrar roster, be an active participant in the trainee education program, and encourage to establish links with local / national / international clinician researchers and / or clinician administrators. The successful applicant will be encouraged to undertake preliminary research / quality projects / commence other postgraduate qualifications in areas of interest mutually beneficial to the Intensive Care First Year Consultant and the Royal Melbourne Intensive Care Unit. The position may be shared between suitable applicants.

About You:
- Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
- MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
- Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand
