General Manager – Public Pathology Network

Help shape a new, connected future for public pathology

The Royal Melbourne Hospital

  • Permanent Full Time position, 5 weeks annual leave and ADO per month
  • Delivery of high-performing, integrated pathology operations across leading health services
  • Inaugural role shaping Victoria’s new integrated Public Pathology Network

Victoria’s public pathology services are evolving. Four renowned health services — The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Royal Children’s Hospital and The Royal Women’s Hospital — are joining forces to form a single, integrated and sustainable public pathology network, led by the RMH. This new approach strengthen collaboration, enhance service quality and deliver more consistent outcomes for patients across the state.

We are seeking an experienced and engaging General Manager to join the inaugural leadership team and play a pivotal role in establishing this network under RMH. This is an opportunity to influence meaningful system change, build new partnerships and support a modern, high‑performing pathology service.

About the Opportunity

In this role, you will guide the network’s operational design, performance and integration activities across multiple laboratory environments. Working alongside senior scientific, medical and operational leaders, you will help create streamlined services that are safe, efficient and connected.

You will:

  • Lead operational planning, coordination and service delivery across all network sites.
  • Develop and embed consistent service models, governance structures and workforce frameworks.
  • Bring teams together across four major health services to support collaboration and shared goals.
  • Oversee operational performance, budgets, workforce capability and risk management.
  • Support major system improvements, including the implementation of a new Laboratory Information System.
  • Foster a culture focused on partnership, high performance and continuous improvement.

The role reports to the Chief Pathologist and Chief Paediatric & Perinatal Pathologist.

About You

You bring strong operational leadership experience and a solid understanding of pathology or clinical laboratory services. You are comfortable managing complexity and energised by opportunities to improve how services work.

You also offer:

  • Demonstrated experience leading operations within pathology or large clinical services.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality systems and regulatory requirements.
  • The ability to lead teams through change and build new operating models.
  • Strong financial, workforce and performance management skills.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and relationship‑building capability.
  • An adaptable, collaborative and solutions‑focused approach.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (postgraduate training desirable).
