Forensic Clinical Specialist

  • Full Time, Fixed Term (Long Service Leave cover until 30 April 2028)

About The Royal Melbourne Hospital:

The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) part of the Parkville Precinct and is one of Australia's leading public hospitals, providing a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services, as well as rehabilitation, aged care, specialist clinics and community programs.

The Forensic Clinical Specialist role provides consultation and liaison to Area Mental Health Service clinicians to support clinical work with consumers who have a forensic history.  The successful applicants will undertake joint assessments of patients with a forensic history or high risk of offending across a range of clinical areas, deliver secondary consultation, education and training, and provide a key liaison function between AMHS’s and correctional services system. 

We are looking for people with excellent communication skills, extensive clinical experience, the ability to provide advice regarding the management of complex high-risk behaviours, and interest and experience in the assessment and treatment of mental health consumers with co-existing forensic problems. 

About the role:

  • Work with a team of enthusiastic multidiscipline professionals providing high-quality care to some of Melbourne’s most marginalised people.
  • Provide timely advice, specialist joint assessments, secondary consultation and on the job training to the specialist mental health workforce in relation to high risk clients.
  • Actively engage with, and be the primary contact for, key agencies
  • Provide support and leadership from a forensic perspective and contribute to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Actively engage in regular direct clinical supervision and peer support and networking activities related to the initiative.

 

About you:

Formal Qualifications

  • This is Senior clinician role open to Clinical / Forensic Psychologists, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Social Workers. 

Essential

  • Demonstrated capacity to provide clinical leadership across the agency
  • At least 5 years post graduate experience in a relevant professional setting
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried Act 1997, Sentencing Act 1991, and other relevant legislation.
  • A sound knowledge of the criminal justice system and other relevant community-based services
  • A thorough knowledge of current mental health approaches in working with mentally and or behaviourally disordered clients
  • Commitment to working with and delivering quality outcomes for high risk clients and those with a history of offending
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as an independent practitioner and to work effectively across a range of mental health teams
  • Demonstrated capacity to build strong and effective relationships with key stakeholders
