About the Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS):
The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Mental Health Services provides recovery-oriented, person-centred care to people across all stages of life. Our Carer Lived Experience team works creatively to support and empower carers, families, and supporters through individual peer support, group programs, and systemic advocacy.
This role is informed and supported by the Carer Lived Experience team and works closely with the Neuropsychiatry and Older Adults programs to strengthen carer inclusion and connection.
Your new role:
As the Carer Peer Support Worker, you will:
- Draw on your personal lived experience as a carer (2 years or more) for someone who has accessed public mental health services — for example, supporting a person with Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia (including younger onset), or a person over 65 with a mental illness.
- Provide emotional support, information, and connection to carers and families of people accessing the Neuropsychiatry Unit and Older Adults Program.
- Work collaboratively with Carer Leads and Clinical Leads to grow the Carer Peer Support Program and promote carer inclusion across RMH MHS.
- Share your caring experience in a way that offers hope, connection, and practical strategies to empower other carers.
About you:
- You have lived experience as a carer supporting an adult with a neuropsychiatric condition and/or mental illness (essential).
- You are passionate about carer inclusion and advocacy.
- You demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across lived experience and clinical teams.
- You are self-motivated, organised, and comfortable working both independently and within a team.
- You are committed to ongoing learning and reflective practice within the carer lived experience workforce.
