The Biomedical Engineer – Class 3 plays a key role in ensuring the safety, performance and reliability of medical equipment used across Melbourne Health.
This role is primarily responsible for the inspection, maintenance, calibration, and repair of a wide range of biomedical equipment (as defined by the TGA), in alignment with Australian Standards, manufacturer guidelines, and RMH policies and procedures. This position includes providing guidance and technical support to Biomedical Engineers in Class 1 and 2 positions. The Class 3 Engineer acts as a mentor and supervisor, helping to build technical capability within the team while ensuring high standards of equipment maintenance and service delivery across Melbourne Health.

About the Role:
- Offer timely and accurate advice to clinical staff regarding the evaluation, acquisition, maintenance, and retirement of medical equipment. Help to ensure decisions are evidence-based, cost-effective, and in line with clinical requirements
- The role contributes to both day-to-day operations and longer-term equipment planning
- Perform testing, calibration, and maintenance of medical equipment in line with AS/NZS 3551:2012 and other relevant standards (AS/NZS 3003:2018, AS/NZS 2500:2020, and AS/NZS 10535:2024)
- Support team performance by monitoring agreed key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring services align with industry standards and patient safety priorities
- Actively contribute to a psychologically safe, inclusive, and performance-focused team culture where ideas and concerns can be raised openly.
About You:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Equipment, protected areas, Australian Standards & TGA legislation
- Degree in electronics or biomedical engineering. Eligible for membership to Engineers Australia or Professionals Australia
- Experience working in/with a tertiary level health service
- Demonstrated skill in the supervision and mentoring of junior Biomedical Engineering Staff
- Demonstrated experience in afterhours On-Call service
- Proven ability to manage complex medical devices/systems related to tasks independently or leading a team, using sound judgement and problem-solving skills
