About Your New Role
The Biomedical Engineer – Class 3 is a key role in supporting the safe, reliable, and effective use of medical equipment across Melbourne Health. The position is primarily responsible for the inspection, maintenance, calibration, and repair of biomedical equipment (as defined by the TGA), in accordance with Australian Standards, manufacturer guidelines, and RMH policies and procedures. Beyond technical responsibilities, the role provides expert advice and support to both clinical and non-clinical stakeholders on the safe use, selection, and evaluation of medical devices. The position contributes to day-today operations as well as longer-term planning of equipment needs and upgrades.
Working under the direction of the Senior Engineer–Supervisor, the incumbent is expected to work independently on professional biomedical engineering projects, taking ownership of technical outcomes and contributing to more complex or critical initiatives that require advanced judgement and planning. For this contracted position, the Class 3 Biomedical Engineer will specifically lead and manage key upcoming projects, including a hospital-wide patient monitoring system upgrade and the rollout of new anaesthetic machines. Responsibilities will include coordinating all project-related activities such as stakeholder communication, documentation, project timelines, and resource management.
The role will work closely with biomedical engineers, clinical users, IT, the EMR team, and vendor representatives, providing guidance and technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle. Acting in a project manager/supervisor capacity, the Class 3 Engineer will play a central role in ensuring the successful implementation and transition to new systems, with a strong focus on minimising clinical downtime and maintaining availability of clinical areas.
