The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) is a leading Australian infectious diseases reference laboratory located in Melbourne, Victoria. VIDRL is now part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty). The Doherty is a joint venture between Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne. VIDRL provides the Victorian Department of Health with virology and Mycobacteria public health reference laboratory services, including surveillance, outbreak investigations, reference testing and research. VIDRL also performs diagnostic testing, mainly in virology, for Victorian hospitals.

The Bioinformatician position sits within the Translational Diagnostics laboratory and will provide computational genomics analysis for VIDRL. The appointee will support the genomics team with the development and implementation of new analysis pipelines that will be NATA accredited.  The right candidate will assist with the validating the implementation of artificial intelligence and machine learning to with diagnostic pathology and genomics.  You will work closely with VIDRL’s Director, laboratory scientist’s, genomic epidemiologists, other bioinformaticians within the Institute as well as government and industry partners.

 

Your new role: 

This fixed term, 12-month position will support VIDRL as a bioinformatician, providing rapid-turnaround diagnostic pathology and whole genome sequencing for a broad range of pathogens of clinical importance. This is a full-time position with the option of part-time for the right candidate.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Scope, design, validate and accredit numerous bioinformatics pipelines to identify microbial pathogens from high dimensional datasets, and accurately record scientific data and results of analyses.
  • Work cohesively within a team environment, providing support and training in the area of NGS and genomics data analysis as required.
  • Administer, organise, collate and manage large genomic data sets; including extraction of meaningful results for large genomics databases.
  • Analyse, prepare and coordinate data for experimental reports and communicate data to the supervisor and stakeholders at the Victorian Department of Health and Commonwealth Department of Health.
  • Ability to extract meaningful genomics information from large scale metagenomic sequencing projects.
  • Provide training and oversight for less senior bioinformatic staff.
  • Contribute to VIDRL’s artificial intelligence and machine learning program.

 

About you:

  • You hold a Bachelor of Science or equivalent as well as or PhD or equivalent in computer science, bioinformatics or related field.
  • You demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to work effectively within a team and engage with government, industry or other professional colleagues.
  • You possess excellent recording keeping and version control of computation and bioinformatic development projects.
  • You have effective time management and leadership skills and an ability to work in a self-directed manner.
  • You are proficient in the use of bioinformatics programming including Python, R, statistics and competence with Linux/CLI.
