The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.
Unit Description:
The Department of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive inpatient service for patients with neurosurgical diseases, with a clinical and referral service for patients with intracranial, spinal and peripheral nerve disorders requiring neurosurgical assessment and treatment. Each year, the department treats over 13,000 outpatients and is involved in more than 2000 operations at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Department of Neurosurgery has active clinical and laboratory research programs that augment each of the clinical specialised programs undertaken by the Department alone and in conjunction with the Departments of Neurology, Radiology and Oncology. Many clinical programs are involved with national and international clinical trials.
The specialised clinical programs include:
- Brain Tumours
- Skull Base, Cerebrovascular
- Spinal Disorders
- Neurotrauma
- Pain Surgery
- Neuro-endocrinology
- Epilepsy and Functional
- Peripheral Nerve
The Department has an active research and teaching program at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level for medical, nursing and allied health staff.
About the role:
Applications are invited from candidates with a minimum of 2 years post intern experience who are eligible for medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia. The successful candidates would participate in rotations through our associated hospitals providing excellent theatre experience in neurosurgery with some weekends and on call duties.
The department runs a strong regular education program and has an excellent track record for success in SET applications.
About You:
- Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
- MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
- Seeking a career in Neurosurgery
- Ability to work in a team
- Well-developed communication and presentation skills.
