Hospital Medical Officer (HMO) – Intensive Care Medicine Pathway - PGY3+ Preferred

Unit Description:

The Royal Melbourne Intensive Care Unit is a state-of-the-art 42 bed facility caring for almost 3000 patients per year and is one of the biggest and busiest ICUs in Australia. We are a tertiary unit caring for general and specialty medical and surgical patients, including neuro, cardiac surgery and trauma and provide ICU care for patients at Royal Women’s Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. The ICU has four pods with a staffing structure that ensures HMOs are well supported. In hours, each pod is staffed by a consultant, registrar and HMO. After hours, each pod is staffed by one ICU registrar, and a single HMO is rostered for the unit overnight, who works with the ICU Senior Registrar to care for patients throughout the unit.

Rotations for this role will be 6 months RMH ICU, 3 months of Emergency Medicine (Wimmera) and a 3-month rotation from general medicine or a range of acute medical specialties. This position is eligible to meet the requirements for Foundation Training for a doctor considering CICM training.

 

About the role:

This role is designed for HMOs (PGY3+ in 2027) who are dedicated to pursuing a career in intensive care medicine. In this role, you will gain 6 months intensive care experience at a major tertiary ICU, which meets the requirements for CICM Foundation Training.

 

Following successful completion of this term HMOs will be supported in applying for the CICM training program. Doctors will also rotate through 3 months of Emergency Medicine (Wimmera), and a 3-month rotation chosen by preferences from a range of acute medical specialities.

 

About You:

  • Current General Registration with the medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
  • Completion of 24 months clinical experience by time of commencement, of which 12 months is within the Australian healthcare system or from a country recognised under the AHPRA competent authority pathway.
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing College of Intensive Care Medicine training.
  • MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Well-developed communication and presentation skills.
