Our state-of-the-art 42 bed capacity ICU is part of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre precinct caring for patients with:

 

  • ­Major traumatic injuries ­
  • Respiratory failure
  • Haematological emergencies
  • Renal failure
  • Obstetric emergencies
  • Sepsis and multi­organ failure ­
  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Infectious disease
  • Neurology and neurosurgery ­

 

 

Applications are now open for RMH ICU education programs, including the Graduate Certificate, RISE, and Bridging programs.

 

All programs will commence 9th February 2026.

 

Positions are 12-month fixed-term contracts, working a part-time rotating roster at 64 hours per fortnight, and located at the RMH city campus.

 

These programs are supported by the Nursing Education Department which comprises a team of experienced and dedicated ICU Clinical Nurse Educators who actively support participants during their transition into critical care nursing.

PROGRAMS:

 

Registered Nurse Introduction to Specialty Education (RISE) - Intensive Care
 

The RISE program aims to support nurses to develop their clinical knowledge and skills in a specialty area of nursing practice. The ICU RISE program prepares Registered Nurses for the beginner level of specialty practice in the Intensive Care Unit. The program is designed to advance clinical practice by providing evidence-based theoretical and practical training alongside supported clinical practice. This can be a pathway for considered entry into the Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care.
 

About the Program

  • Open to Registered Nurses with at least one-year of acute clinical experience
  • This is a twelve-month program, commencing with a six-month education program followed by six-months of consolidation in the clinical setting
  • Internal program with no associated fees
  • Offers theoretical and practical education, clinical exposure and supervision to advance your knowledge and clinical skills within the critical care setting, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Participants will learn and apply fundamental concepts of ICU nursing through participation in study days and online learning modules, completion of a clinical practice portfolio, and supported clinical practice.

Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing- Deakin University
 

­The Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing is provided through a partnership between RMH ICU and Deakin University. This program is designed to provide nurses with the theoretical concepts, clinical skills, and experience required to become competent and professional clinical practitioner within the ICU.  Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate program entitles one to a qualification as a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and gains a qualification allowance.

About the Program

  • Enrolment into a Master of Nursing Practice through Deakin University is required, with exit points at Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma levels
  • The Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing program is open to Registered Nurses with at least two-years acute clinical experience
  • Learning is developed through skills workshops, team-based learning, lectures, on-line modules, clinical assessments and supervised clinical practice
  • Participants must complete both hospital and university components of their studies to be successful in the program

Bridging Program - Intensive Care
 

The ICU Bridging program is designed for Registered Nurses who hold a post graduate qualification in critical care and would like a supported transition to working in Intensive Care. It aims to advance participants’ prior learning and skills to be able to provide comprehensive care within the ICU clinical specialty and expand evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills. 

 

About the Program

  • Open to Critical Care Registered Nurses (CCRNs) who hold a post graduate qualification in critical care (Emergency, Cardiology, Cardiothoracics)
  • Internal program with no associated fees
  • Twelve-month training program incorporating face-to-face and interactive online education, tutorials and skills workshops, competency assessments and supported clinical practice.
