Carer Peer Support Worker – Neuropsychiatry

About RMH & The Team
The RMH Neuropsychiatry Service is a statewide specialist mental health service with over 50 years of expertise, bringing together specialists across neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, neurology, nursing and allied health to deliver comprehensive care and assessment.
We are seeking a Carer Peer Support Worker (CPSW) to support carers and families of consumers admitted to the Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit.
Drawing on your lived experience as a carer, you will provide compassionate peer support to families navigating complex neuropsychiatric conditions that can involve changes in cognition, behaviour and personality; working alongside the Carer Lived Experience team and multidisciplinary clinicians,
This role plays an important part in strengthening carer inclusion within Neuropsychiatry and across RMH, improving the experience of carers and families during a very challenging time.
About the role
- Provide one-to-one peer support to carers and families through face-to-face, phone or video sessions
- Offer emotional support, information and practical guidance
- Support carers experiencing grief, adjustment and ambiguous loss related to neuropsychiatric conditions
- Help carers identify their own needs and focus on their wellbeing
- Connect carers with appropriate community services and supports
- Support carers to understand their rights and engage with services confidently
- Work collaboratively with the Neuropsychiatry multidisciplinary team
- Contribute to initiatives that strengthen carer-inclusive practice
About You
To succeed in this role, you will bring both personal lived experience and a commitment to supporting other carers.
You will have:
- Significant lived experience (2+ years) as a carer supporting someone who has accessed public mental health services
- Insight into the challenges of supporting someone experiencing mental health, neurological or cognitive changes
- Understanding of issues such as carer grief, ambiguous loss, and changing family dynamics
- The ability to use your lived experience purposefully and safely to support others
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting, non-judgmental relationships
- The ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
- Strong organisation skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team
Desirable
- Experience in a carer peer support or lived experience role
- Knowledge of Victorian mental health services and community supports
- Training in family or carer peer support approaches
