SHIELD Senior Nurse Educator

VICNISS (Victorian healthcare-associated infection surveillance) is a leading Australian organisation based at The Royal Melbourne Hospital which is responsible for infection surveillance, prevention and control, aiming to optimise infection prevention and control practice in order to deliver the safest quality of care in acute and aged care sectors. The investigator team for the SHIELD project includes leaders from VICNISS coordinating centre, working in collaboration with infection prevention experts from other universities and hospitals.

Your new role:  

The role of the senior nurse educator will involve responsibilities related to delivering a Train-the-Trainer model of education to hospital staff and assessing their competency in performing data collection for a point prevalence survey (PPS) for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) undertaken in Victorian hospitals, Specifically, over 8-12 months, the role will include; 

  • Developing user content and resource material for training hospital staff in performance of a point prevalence survey (PPS) for HAIs
  • Developing and implementing a training program for data collectors from hospitals, working closely with investigators to ensure delivery of high-quality training
  • Educating existing Infection Prevention staff in Victorian hospitals to achieve competence in PPS methodology, and 
  • Facilitating workshops, seminars, and hands-on training sessions
  • Evaluating staff competency and satisfaction 
  • Providing mentorship and ongoing support to trainers and trainees including providing telephone and email helpdesk assistance
  • Support the project team in documentation, reporting, and compliance with research ethics and governance requirements.

About you: 

  • You are a registered nurse, with current registration in Australia
  • You have demonstrated experience in clinical education, nursing education, or training program development.
  • You have experience in infection prevention and control or healthcare-associated infection surveillance.
  • You have strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage diverse healthcare professionals.
  • You have the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • You have experience in competency assessment and evaluation of training programs.
  • You have high level organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • You may also have experience in implementing a Train-the-Trainer model or similar capacity-building programs.
