Biomedical Engineer - Class 4

About the Role

As a Biomedical Engineer – Class 3, you will play a key role in keeping medical equipment safe, reliable and fit for purpose across Melbourne Health. Working across a broad range of biomedical equipment, you will apply your technical expertise to the inspection, maintenance, calibration and repair of equipment used in patient care.

You will work in line with Australian Standards, TGA requirements, manufacturer guidelines and RMH policies and procedures, using your technical judgement to manage complex equipment and systems.

As a senior member of the Biomedical Engineering team, you will also provide technical guidance, supervision and mentoring to Class 1 and 2 Biomedical Engineers. You will help build capability across the team while contributing to consistent, high-quality equipment maintenance and service delivery across Melbourne Health.

Key Accountabilities

• Offer timely and accurate advice to clinical staff regarding the evaluation, acquisition, maintenance, and retirement of medical equipment. Help to ensure decisions are evidence-based, cost-effective, and in line with clinical requirements
• The role contributes to both day-to-day operations and longer-term equipment planning
• Perform testing, calibration, and maintenance of medical equipment in line with AS/NZS 3551:2012 and other relevant standards (AS/NZS 3003:2018, AS/NZS 2500:2020, and AS/NZS 10535:2024)
• Support team performance by monitoring agreed key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring services align with industry standards and patient safety priorities
• Actively contribute to a psychologically safe, inclusive, and performance-focused team culture where ideas and concerns can be raised openly.

About You

You will bring:

• Demonstrated knowledge of medical equipment, protected areas, Australian Standards and TGA legislation
• A degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering and eligibility for membership of Engineers Australia or Professionals Australia
• Experience working within or with a tertiary health service
• Demonstrated experience supervising and mentoring junior Biomedical Engineering staff
• Demonstrated experience participating in an after-hours on-call service
• Proven ability to independently manage complex medical devices and systems, or lead a team in their management, using sound judgement and effective problem-solving skills
