RMH Mental Health Services Psychiatry Registrar – 1st Year 

This is a 12-month or 24-month Full Time, Fixed term position commencing 1st February 2027.

Unit Description:

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS) provide comprehensive hospital-based, community and specialist services to youth, adults and older adults.  It has strong secondment partnerships with the Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS, formerly known as Orygen) and other health services in the west and north of metropolitan Melbourne. 

 

RMH MHS Psychiatry Training Program offers a highly successful and varied training experience with a great choice of rotations across all training levels. We pride ourselves on being able to offer enviable breadth in well supported clinical roles and opportunities to pursue research, further study or other interests.  

 

Our training program is enhanced with access to our experienced coordinator of First Year training, psychotherapy coordinator, scholarly project coordinators, exam preparation coordinator and service coordinator of training. We offer a broad and varied range of teaching and education opportunities including psychiatric interview tutorials, psychotherapy tutorials, an observed interview program, Grand Rounds and regular peer and consultant led teaching.  

 

About the role:

This is an accredited psychiatry training position appropriate to first year of training in general adult inpatient/outpatients, which once successfully completed, opens up the pathway to a broad range of roles available across all levels of psychiatry training within acute inpatient units, integrated community mental health teams, residential rehabilitation units (PARCs & CCUs), specialist homeless outreach services, emergency mental health services, consultation-liaison psychiatry, autism assessment service, First Nations social and emotional wellbeing service, and more.

 

Further training opportunities through our close partnerships with multiple specialist services including Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS), The Royal Children’s Hospital, Statewide Neuropsychiatry and Eating Disorder services, Forensicare, The Melbourne Clinic, Albert Road Clinic and the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry.

 

About You:

  • General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) at the commencement of training in February 2027.
  • A minimum of 2 years general medical/HMO experience (pre-vocational) at the time of transition to a 1st Year registrar (i.e. February 2027);
  • At the time of your application, at least one term (10 weeks) of Psychiatry experience as a HMO/ unaccredited registrar.
  • A passion for caring and making a genuine difference in the lives of public mental health consumers, families and carers while working across inpatient and community settings.
  • Have a high level of interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrated ability to consult and liaise with consumers, carers, family members and other professionals.
