Psychiatry Registrar – Unaccredited – Position Description

Unit Description:
The Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS) provide comprehensive hospital-based, community and specialist services to youth, adults and older adults. It operates in partnership with other health services in the west and north of metropolitan Melbourne, including Parkville Youth MH & Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) in a secondment arrangement.
RMH MHS Psychiatry Training Program offers a highly successful and varied training experience with a great choice of rotations to meet your training requirements and career interests.

Our training program is enhanced with access to our experienced coordinator of First Year training, psychotherapy coordinator, scholarly project coordinators, exam preparation coordinator and service coordinator of training. We offer a broad and varied range of teaching and education opportunities including psychiatric interview tutorials, psychotherapy tutorials, an observed interview program, Grand Rounds and regular peer and consultant led teaching.
About the role:
- Accredited psychiatry training positions available across all levels of psychiatry training within acute inpatient units, integrated community mental health teams, residential rehabilitation units (PARCs & CCUs), specialist homeless outreach services and emergency mental health services.
- Unaccredited/pre-vocational psychiatry registrar roles with an expectation that our unaccredited registrars will apply to enter accredited psychiatry training at a later stage.
- Opportunities to work in First Nations Social & Emotional Wellbeing Services, forensic psychiatry and research.
- Further training opportunities through our close partnerships with multiple specialist services including Parkville Youth MH & Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS), The Royal Children’s Hospital, Statewide Neuropsychiatry and Eating Disorder services and the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry.
- This is a full-time position and involves both in-hours and regular on-call out-of-hours duties.
- Completion of appropriate ward/community paperwork, discharge summaries/letters and legal paperwork required by the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act.
- Attendance at Mental Health Tribunal hearings as required.
There is no opportunity within this role to move into other medical streams.
About You:
- General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA);
- Stage 2 or Stage 3 RANZCP Psychiatry trainee
- Desirable: completed mandatory Child and CL rotations
or
- Unaccredited Registrar
- Essential: at least 3 months experience working in a mental health setting
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a hospital setting or in the community with an integrated community care model.
- A passion for caring and making a genuine difference in the lives of public mental health consumers, families and carers while working across inpatient and community settings.
- Have a high level of interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrated ability to consult and liaise with consumers, carers, family members and other professionals.
