Unit Description:

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS) provide comprehensive hospital-based, community and specialist services to youth, adults and older adults.  It operates in partnership with other health services in the west and north of metropolitan Melbourne, including Parkville Youth MH & Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) in a secondment arrangement.

 

Our Adult Inpatient Units and Community programs are based at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and associated sites (Parkville), Waratah Clinic (Moonee Ponds), rehabilitation facilities (Travencore).

We offer a broad and varied range of teaching and education to our Doctors in Training (i.e., pre-vocational and vocational DiTs), including psychiatric interview tutorials, psychotherapy tutorials, Grand Rounds and regular peer and consultant led teaching.

 

About the role:

  • This is an unaccredited/pre-vocational psychiatry registrar role and there is an expectation that our unaccredited registrars will apply to enter accredited psychiatry training at a later stage. 
  • Assist senior medical staff in the care of mental health consumers within inpatient units and community mental health settings. Includes reviews, ward rounds, management plans, discharge planning and consultation assessments.
  • This is a full-time position and involves both in-hours and regular on-call out-of-hours duties.
  • Completion of appropriate ward/community paperwork, discharge summaries/letters and legal paperwork required by the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act. 
  • Attendance at Mental Health Tribunal hearings as required.

There is no opportunity within this role to move into other medical streams.

 

About You:

  • Hold current General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).
  • You have a minimum of 2 years’ experience (i.e., completed PGY1 and PGY2).
  • At the time of your application, at least one term (10 weeks) of Psychiatry experience as a HMO/ Unaccredited Registrar.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a hospital setting or in the community with an integrated community care model.
  • A passion for caring and making a difference in the lives of public mental health consumers, families and carers and with a genuine interest in a career in psychiatry.
  • Have a high level of interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrated ability to consult and liaise with consumers, carers, family members and other professionals.
