Unit Description:

The RMH ED is Victoria’s busiest adult Emergency Department seeing over 90,000 patients annually and is one of two of Victoria’s major Trauma services caring for more than 5,300 trauma patients per year, of which 1,300 are major trauma patients. We are the state’s premier emergency stroke care centre, Victoria’s first emergency clot retrieval service, and deliver the fastest emergency stroke treatment in Australia. We provide tertiary and quaternary services for trauma, neurosurgery, neurology and infectious diseases to patients from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and southern NSW. Our patients are high acuity - 66% of patients have an Australasian Triage Scale categories of 1, 2 and 3 and nearly 50% of patients require hospital admission.

Our ED comprises 52-beds including 8 resuscitation and trauma bays, 3 high consequence pathogen negative pressure rooms, and an Observational Medicine unit with co-located 28-bed Short Stay units and a separate 12-bed ‘Hub’ specifically for mental health, psychosocial crisis and toxicology patients.

The RMH is a major teaching hospital and academic centre, sitting at the epicentre of the Parkville Precinct. Consisting of RMH, VCCC, RWH, RCH, University of Melbourne, Walter and Elisa Hall and the Doherty Institutes, together they offer a broad range of clinical experience and world class opportunities for collaboration and research. RMH ED is closely affiliated with the University of Melbourne Department of Critical Care and our ED has a strong track record in ED research with several highly published and active researchers on staff able to support trainees in research projects.

We are staffed medically by 37 EFT of FACEMs, 31 EFT of Registrars, 2 EFT of ED-Stream HMOs plus JMOs and Medical Support Officers. The RMH ED is committed to supporting staff and provides part-time and flexible work arrangements. The Consultant team have a broad post-graduate expertise in trauma, medical education and simulation, research, ultrasound, retrieval and pre-hospital medicine, infectious diseases and toxicology.

RMH ED is heavily focussed on education with a highly successful Emergency Registrar training program, as well as JMO, medical student, nurse practitioner and post-graduate nursing education programmes. Numerous consultants are involved in education at a national and international level. There will be multiple opportunities for Registrars to take part in a variety of clinical support activities, including education, trauma and quality projects as part of TS4 requirements.

 

About the role:

The RMH ED strives to be an environment where Consultants, Registrars, Junior Medical Officers, Nurse Practitioners, Primary Physiotherapists, Medical Support Officers, Nurses and Allied Health work together as an integrated team to provide our patients with safe, timely and high-quality care based on the best available evidence.

Registrars are the vital backbone of the ED, staffing the department 24 hours a day; directly supervised by consultants between 08:00-01:00 seven days a week. ED Registrars rotate through roles in the Emergency Department (Trauma, Resuscitation bays and general cubicles), Fast Track and Observation Medicine.

ED Registrars work as part of a multidisciplinary Trauma Team to provide world class trauma care. You will receive dedicated trauma education with teaching in trauma procedures, multidisciplinary trauma team and team-leading simulation training, and opportunity to attend inter-departmental trauma management lectures and grand rounds.

You will learn to manage high acuity and complex patients with multiple co-morbidities, fully supported by the breadth of specialist/subspecialist units and critical care services including interventional radiology and ECMO.

The RMH ED is accredited for two years training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and has an outstanding registrar education program with protected teaching time each week, in-house primary and fellowship exam preparation courses and unsurpassed ACEM examination success rates; registrars are expected to commit and contribute to the training program.

As a RMH ED Registrar, you have access to internal rotations including Anaesthetics, ICU, and Psychiatry and external rotations to the Royal Women's, Royal Children's, The Northern, Royal Victorian Eye & Ear and Sunshine Hospitals. There are country anaesthetic rotations to Wangaratta Hospital available for registrars seeking experience in rural emergency medicine.

ED Registrars are involved with on-the-floor teaching of University of Melbourne medical students, medical elective students, nurse practitioner candidates and postgraduate nursing students.

The RMH ED is affiliated with the University of Melbourne Medical School Department of Critical Care creating the opportunity for our Registrars to engage in research projects in areas ranging from cutting edge trauma research to infectious diseases, toxicology, and mental health.

 

A       About You:

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for Provisional Registration with the Medical Board of Australia via the Competent Authority Pathway (for international Medical Graduates).
  • Appropriate tertiary health qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
  • Minimum 3-years post graduate experience.
  • Demonstrated interest and performance in the provision of Clinical Emergency Medicine.
  • Demonstrated commitment to further training in the field of Clinical Emergency Medicine.
