Unit Description:
About the Australian Rare Cancer Portal
Established in 2020, with funding from the Australian Genomics Medicine Centre, now known as Omico, the ARC Portal serves as a comprehensive resource for treating cancer specialists and their patients, by facilitating access to expert advice from Australian and international sub-specialists in rare cancers. Through direct referrals, cancer specialists can access detailed guidance on diagnosis and genomic profiling, which increases treatment options for patients, recommendations regarding management and therapies, including improved access to clinical trials and support for access to high-cost drugs.
The ARC Portal enhances equity by providing access to specialist rare cancer care outside of metropolitan areas by allowing everyone to access the same level of expert advice regardless of geography, reducing the need for unnecessary travel to tertiary or specialist cancer centres in capital cities. This bridges an acute unmet need for these patients, as without the ARC Portal expertise, their care and treatment options are more limited.
In July 2025, BioGrid Australia (BioGrid) was provided further funding from the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care to support the ongoing operation of the ARC Portal and expansion into Queensland and other underserved jurisdictions including NT, SA and WA.
