Specialist Metabolic Physician
28 hours per fortnight Fractional/Ongoing- commencing 02 February 2026
The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.
Unit Description:
The Royal Melbourne Hospital is responsible for the state-wide centre for the ongoing care of adult patients with inherited metabolic disease, including those transitioning cared from the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and an increasing number of adult patients referred both internally and from centres across Victoria and Tasmania. These patients have suspected and confirmed genetic metabolic conditions, such as phenylketonuria, acute porphyrias, lysosomal storage diseases, glycogen storage diseases and mitochondrial diseases.
About the role:
The Specialist Physician in Metabolic Diseases is a 0.4 EFT fraction appointment, responsible for providing expert clinical care to patients with inherited metabolic disorders through outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and participation in a shared on-call roster. The role also includes supervision and mentorship of trainees and fellows, contribution to multidisciplinary team care, and active involvement in the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based metabolic medicine services. There is an opportunity to participle in international, multi-centre, sponsored clinical trials, as well as lead investigator-initiated trials.

About You:
- FRACP or equivalent qualification
- Medical Board of Australia registration as a medical practitioner
- Demonstrable interest in the diagnosis of and care for patients with Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
- Completion of Advanced Training in a relevant specialty, such as metabolic diseases, general medicine, endocrinology, neurology or genetics.
- Ability to work independently without supervision, but also within a multidisciplinary team.
