Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) is Victoria’s newest public mental health service dedicated to the care of young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing complex mental health challenges.

The Opportunity:

This opportunity to cover 12 months of Long Service leave across 2 headspace sites and an ASD assessment team.

headspace Craigieburn and Sunshine are two of the five headspace centres situated within the PYMHWS catchment. They are, as are all five, managed by Orygen Limited. The main workforce at both centres is made up of allied health professionals in a number of care streams which provide short-term support. These are an intake service (Access Team), psychological therapy streams, a trans and gender diverse service, and a small team of clinicians able to provide case-management support (Enhanced Care). headspace Craigieburn also has sessional General Practitioners at the centre, and in two local schools (DIS program).

The headspace Autism Assessment Team is based at PYHMHS Parkville, and provides multi-disciplinary assessments to young people who are clients of the five headspace centres in the PYMHWS catchment.

About the Role:

Currently we are seeking a Psychiatrist for the role of:

Consultant Psychiatrist – headspace & Autism Assessment – 28 hours per fortnight

Consultant Psychiatrists work in close partnership with the Medical Director, Clinical Director of Community and Enhanced Care, Clinical Director of Acute, Admitted Care & FYMHS and the Operational Director as well as with Regional and team leadership.

The Consultant Psychiatrist will carry out their duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the Medical Director and DCS. The Consultant Psychiatrist may be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of the Authorised Psychiatrist for PYMHWS, as required by the Mental Health Act.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Provide psychiatric assessments to young people receiving care in other streams of the headspace centre.
  • From this assessment, assist in planning for the further care of the young person either within headspace or with the appropriate external services, including GPs and tertiary mental health services.
  • Support a young person’s GP to manage their pharmacological treatment.
  • Supervise the psychiatry registrar working at the centre in their role.
  • Play a key role in the clinical governance at the centres via guiding management of complex cases at weekly clinical review sessions.
  • To provide leadership more generally across PYMHWS by participating as requested in quality and risk, service development and innovation meetings as requested.
  • As a member of the assessment team, take part in its components processes: ie. Taking a developmental history from carers, administering to the ADOS structured assessment, developing a diagnostic formulation, providing recommendations for intervention, and writing a comprehensive report.
  • Participate in the PYMHWS on-call roster 5-6 weeks per calendar year
  • Participate in the PYMHWS Medical Education and Training Program.

 

About You:

Formal Qualifications:

  • Registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.

Essential:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all aspects of psychiatry, and with substantial experience and expertise in clinical practice with young people (aged 12-25 years) experiencing mental disorders.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills and experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in multidisciplinary work and the development of effective working relationships with consumers and carers.
  • Ability to demonstrate aptitude for and expertise in service development.
  • Knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health Wellbeing Act 2022.
  • A Working with Children check
  • PYHMWS will organise a Police Check prior to commencement of employment
  • A current Victorian Driving license
