Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) is Victoria’s newest public mental health service dedicated to the care of young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing complex mental health challenges.

As we continue to grow, we are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist who will carry out their duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the Medical Director and DCS. The Consultant Psychiatrist may be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of the Authorised Psychiatrist for PYMHWS, as required by the Mental Health Act.

About the Roles: 

Consultant Psychiatrists work in close partnership with the Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Director of Community and Enhanced Care, Clinical Director of Acute, Admitted Care and FYMHS, and the Operational Director as well as with Regional and team leadership. 

The roles of the Consultant Psychiatrist are: 

• To provide expert clinical leadership to the clinical team including maintaining high clinical standards, team professional development and supervision of team registrars and other staff as needed. 

• To provide leadership more generally across PYMHWS by participating as requested in quality and risk, service development and innovation meetings as requested. 

• The Consultant Psychiatrist will carry out their duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the Medical Director and DCS. The Consultant Psychiatrist may be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of the Authorised Psychiatrist for PYMHWS, as required by the Mental Health Act. 

 
Currently we are seeking Consultant Psychiatrists for the roles of: 

Hospital in the Home (HITH) 0.6FTE (42hrs hpf)  

Hospital in The Home (HITH) is a PYMHWS program providing hospital-level care to young people (12–25) in their homes. Available 24/7, a multidisciplinary team delivers coordinated, short-term acute care while supporting transitions between services. The program works closely with families, carers, and other providers, and is guided by evidence-based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed practices.  

Early Psychosis (EPPIC) 0.4FTE (28hrs hpf)  

Forming part of the Continuing Care Team, the Early Psychosis team provides early intervention to young people at ultra-high risk of developing a psychotic illness, or experiencing a first episode of psychosis, who may also present with a range of comorbid mental health issues.    

The service operates over a number of sites and staff may be required to work from Parkville, Footscray, Spotswood, Wyndham, Sunshine, Melton, or other sites within the catchment. Ongoing commitment to improve service accessibility has seen the development of new sites, including the Sunshine Service, based within the Youth Hub and collocated with headspace, as well as satellite clinics in Wyndham and Melton. As these sites develop, staff may be based at different sites dependent on the specific requirements of the position.   
 
Youth Access Team (YAT) 0.4FTE (28hrs pfn)  

The YAT team manages all new referrals to the PYMHWS via its Triage function. The YAT Acute function provides timely mental health assessment to young people who require a tertiary mental health response, The YAT team also provides young people with mental health support and treatment which includes crisis intervention when required. YAT clinicians utilise youth specific evidence based interventions to ensure a high standard of youth specific mental health care is provide to young people.   

The YAT team provides centre based care and out reach home visits to meet the needs of young people and their significant others.   

 
Inpatient Unit (IPU) 0.6FTE (42hrs pfn)   

Forming a part of the PYMHWS Acute Services, the PYMHWS Inpatient Unit (IPU) is a 16-bed low dependency area and a further three beds (ICA – West) for targeted specialised service delivery for young people with complex mental health and psychosocial needs. Our unit adheres to a philosophy of least restrictive practice, that is recovery focussed and young person centred.   

A full-time position can be considered with a combination of FTE across two streams.   

 
What You'll Do: 

The Consultant Psychiatrist will carry out their duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the Medical Director and DCS. The Consultant Psychiatrist may be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of the Authorised Psychiatrist for PYMHWS, as required by the Mental Health Act. 
 
You will: 

• Provide Medical Leadership to a passionate, experienced multidisciplinary team of Mental Health nurses, Clinical Psychologists and Allied Health and lived experience workforce 

• Deliver Youth focused care to young people aged 12-25 and their families who live in the catchment area 

• Supervise Psychiatry Registrars 

• Participate in the PYMHWS on call roster 5-6 weeks per calendar year 

• Participate in the PYMHWS Medical Education and Training Program 

About You: 

✔️ Registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. 

✔️ Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
