The Opportunity:
Department Description
The Consultant Psychiatrist is a clinical leadership position within local clinical teams within Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service. As a clinical leader, the Consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for demonstrating high standards of clinical care, team leadership and professional values in order to achieve best outcomes for our clients and their carers.
The HYPE stream provides an evidence-based early intervention service for young people experiencing some or all of the problems that are referred to as borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other personality disorders and who may also present with other co-occurring mental health difficulties. The aims of HYPE are to support the social and vocational recovery of young people, promote adaptive help seeking and wellbeing and reduce the impact of their mental health difficulties.
HYPE’s model of Relational Clinical Care comprises assertive clinical case management, general psychiatric care, individual psychotherapy (using Cognitive Analytic Therapy - CAT), family work and other supports such a vocational support. Psychiatrists within the Stream are provided with CAT training and supervision and may be involved in training and research.

About the Role:
Consultant Psychiatrists work in close partnership with the Medical Director, Clinical Director of Community and Enhanced Care, Clinical Director of Acute, Admitted Care and FYMHS, and the Operational Director as well as with Regional and team leadership.
The roles of the Consultant Psychiatrist are:
- To provide expert clinical leadership to the clinical team including maintaining high clinical standards, team professional development and supervision of team registrars and other staff as needed.
- To provide leadership more generally across PYMHWS by participating as requested in quality and risk, service development and innovation meetings as requested.
The Consultant Psychiatrist will carry out their duties in consultation with and under the guidance of the Medical Director and DCS. The Consultant Psychiatrist may be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of the Authorised Psychiatrist for PYMHWS, as required by the Mental Health Act.
Currently we are seeking a Psychiatrist for the role of:
Consultant Psychiatrist – HYPE Parkville 28 hours per fortnight
What You'll Do:
- Medical Leadership to a passionate, experienced multidisciplinary team of Mental Health nurses, Clinical Psychologists and Allied Health and lived experience workforce
- Deliver Youth focused care to young people aged 12-25 and their families who live in the Wyndham catchment area
- Supervise Psychiatry Registrars
- Participate in the PYHMWS on call roster 5-6 weeks per calendar year
- Participate in the PYMWS Medical Education and Training Program
About You:
- Registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
Essential:
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all aspects of psychiatry, and with substantial experience and expertise in clinical practice with young people (aged 12-25 years) experiencing mental disorders.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills and experience.
- Ability to demonstrate skills in multidisciplinary work and the development of effective working relationships with consumers and carers.
- Ability to demonstrate aptitude for and expertise in service development.
- Knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health Wellbeing Act 2022.
- Capacity to develop effective working relationships, collaborations and partnerships with a range of services within the broader community service system including alcohol and other drug agencies, employment and housing services, Mental Health Community Support Services and related services.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as well as abilities in problem solving and negotiation.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and function autonomously.
Desirable:
- Willingness to work from a community-based site, and across multiple sites if required
- Have experience in teaching and involvement in research.
- A current Victorian driver’s licence.
- Knowledge of relevant guidelines, plans and strategies related to the mental health service system (E.g. Victorian Mental Health Reform Strategy, National Standards for Mental Health Services, etc).
